Description:

The overuse of antibiotics has resulted in bacterial strains that are resistant to these medications. To improve antibiotic stewardship and reduce the threat of antibiotic resistance, the ADA has released a clinical practice guideline on the use of antibiotics for the urgent management of pulpal- and periapical-related dental pain and intraoral swelling. This course provides an overview of the guideline and addresses when to prescribe and when not to prescribe antibiotics for clinical scenarios involving symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, symptomatic apical periodontitis, and localized acute apical abscess.

After this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the current evidence on antibiotic use in dentistry
  • Incorporate into practice the latest ADA recommendations for the use of antibiotics for dental pain and swelling
  • Work with patients to identify the situations when antibiotics may or may not be necessary
