Born and raised in the city of Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Makary moved to the USA at the age of 16. Like many immigrants, she had to adjust to a new way of living including being given the option to choose an educational and career path. She was fortunate to have shadowed her uncle at an early age in Egypt as he performed procedures on relatives and traveled with him to non-profit clinics where he volunteered. As a result, she decided to pursue a career in dentistry. She graduated from the University of Florida College Of Dentistry in 2014. She gained clinical experience working in corporate and private offices for 2 years prior to transitioning to a position with Sulzbacher, a Federally Qualified Health Center with a focus on providing care for the low income and homeless population of Jacksonville, Florida. She completed training for IV moderate sedation as part of a public health initiative to increase access to care. She accepted a position as Director of Dental Services in 2018 with Sulzbacher and have been serving in that role since.
