Overview
The dentist plays a critical role in the
detection of oral cancers and in educating their patients on the importance of
HPV vaccination. In this presentation, Gary Heyamoto, DDS, MAGD, President,
Academy of General Dentistry Foundation (AGDF) discusses the importance of
performing a consistent, thorough clinical oral exam, how to discuss HPV
vaccination with patients, be able to describe Anterior Mouth and Posterior
Mouth from a medical perspective and learn how dentists can participate, as an
office, in fighting HPV oral cancers through awareness and promotion of the HPV
vaccine.
This course is first in the three-part series "HPV Cancers
in Action" from the ADA Council on Advocacy for Access & Prevention (CAAP).
More than ever, there is a need to increase awareness of HPV and of educating
the public on the need for HPV immunization. The administration of the HPV
vaccine is a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of HPV-related cancers,
including certain head and neck cancers. HPV is now associated with more than
20,000 cases of head and neck cancer each year in the United States, according
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC).Learning objectives:
