Course Overview
Different political, religious & social views can create implicit & explicit bias on behalf of the dental team as well as patients raising ethical concerns. How should patients who insist on only be treated by one gender or one ethnicity be treated? How should the dentist handle patients who discriminate against or harass staff? This interactive session will discuss ways to manage these ethically complex dilemmas respecting the autonomy of all participants and acting in a just and truthful way.

Presented on behalf of the American Dental Association Council on Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs (CEBJA) by Dr. Robert J. Wilson, CEBJA chair,Dr. Alma J. Clark, Dr. Bruce A. Burton, Dr. Allen B. Reavis, Dr. Debra S. West, and Dr. Carlos Smith.

• Describe ethical and professional obligations of dentists when treating offensive patients
• Discuss how implicit and explicit bias can be addressed under the Principles of the ADA Code
• Develop strategies for the ethical management of implicit and explicit bias in dental practice
