Is fluoride varnish safe? Validating the safety of fluoride varnish (May 2021 Article 2)

Background. Fluoride varnish is widely used in dentistry as a caries preventive measure with recommendations for its use even in infants. In addition, nondental providers are also applying varnish on children’s teeth in various settings. However, there are questions from these nondental providers as to the safety of fluoride varnish.

A case-control study of topical and supplemental fluoride use and osteosarcoma risk (May 2021 Article 1)

Background. A relationship between fluoride and osteosarcoma has been hypothesized but not validated. To the authors’ knowledge, there are no published studies examining topical fluoride or dietary fluoride supplements and osteosarcoma risk. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between ever or never use of topical and dietary fluoride supplements and osteosarcoma.

Efficacy of personal protective equipment against coronavirus transmission via dental handpieces (August 2021 Article 3)

Background. This laboratory study was done to evaluate the efficacy of personal protective equipment (PPE) and high-volume evacuation (HVE) against the spread of human coronavirus type 229E (HCoV-229E) during a standard dental procedure.

In this 1-hour workshop, participants will learn about NAMI Chicago's resources, dive deep into the definition of wellness, learn how to recognize when a colleague is struggling, and identify ways to be supportive. The presenter will address specific aspects of the dental practice and workplace that provide challenges and opportunities for wellness and NAMI Chicago will provide wellness techniques and strategies that dentists and their teams can implement to build resilience and improve workplace wellness. To round out the session, participants will create their own "Wellness Plan" in order to better manage stress and engage in self-care.
The mission of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chicago is to improve the lives of those affected by mental health conditions.

This presentation will help you:
• Have an understanding of NAMI Helpline and resources
• Dedicate space and time to consider the trauma and impact of COVID-19
• Understand stress and burnout and how they occur
• Know the signs that you or someone else may be in need of extra support
• Learn how to serve as a support for colleagues, friends, and family
