Overview
In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the
ADA and the Society of American Indian Dentists hosted this panel
discussion "Amplifying Voices: Decolonizing Dentistry." American Indians and Alaskan Natives (AI/AN), also referred
to as Native Americans, currently suffer from the worst oral health outcomes in
comparison to any racial or ethnic group within the United States.
The discussion covers:
• Ways to make dentistry more
inclusive to indigenous populations (patients and professionals)
• How
the infrastructure/profession of dentistry may challenge indigenous cultural
values
•Ways indigenous populations celebrate culture in their practice
•
Oral health disparities and barriers indigenous people face due to
marginalization
• Personal experiences about their indigenous heritage and
